Approximately 20% of individuals living in Gateway reported having a disability. This makes it difficult to achieve fully social integration and community engagement. Further, the neighborhood has very limited car ownership and significant distance to the nearest metro stop. Being engaged in a community is difficult when mobility is so limited.
The community is almost 90% African American and increasingly Hispanic. Still there is a reported 10/100,000 incidents of hate crimes in the Gateway neighborhood, higher than average. Births to teen mothers is high, creating a lack of engagement because single mothers are taking care of the household. Almost 50% of households in the Gateway area are single mother lead households. Voter turnout is estimated to be less than 50%. |
